Chapter 20

We hustled Reggie inside quick. I didn’t like ushering him through my front door, and not just because the longer I stayed close to him, the fiercer my scars burned. It had been bad enough when I’d thought he was harboring a demon. Now I couldn’t look at him without knowing what was working under his skin.

I had better reason than most to be wary of angels, considering I’d killed their boss and all. I’d taken out more than a few of them on my way to him, too.

As Reggie collapsed into my client chair without taking off his windbreaker, I took a good long look into his eyes. They were fully human—no trace of fire in them. Sparky didn’t seem too bothered, either. He went on alert as soon as he caught a whiff of Reggie, but he was content to stand by the door to my inner office with one red eye on Reggie, keeping watch.

“You have to help me,” Reggie gasped. “Whatever you did… it didn’t work. I’m losing more and more time. And the thing inside me… I can feel it. It’s burning under my skin, and it’s angry.” His eyes, desperate, searched mine. “It’s true, isn’t it? I really do have a demon in me.”

Jane and I exchanged a silent look. Neither of us answered.

Reggie didn’t seem to notice. “Isn’t there anything else you can do?” he asked. “Where’s the priest? Doesn’t he have a… an extra-strength exorcism he can give me?”

Jane went to him and squeezed his shoulder with an unexpected ferocity that made him jerk his gaze up to hers, startled. “It’s going to be okay,” she said with fierce intensity. “You’re going to be okay.”

I shot her a warning look. However bad off Reggie was now, I had a feeling it wouldn’t improve his situation any for him to find out what he was really carrying under his skin.

Reggie blinked up at her. “Why are you acting weird?”

Jane pulled her hand back. “I’m not. I just want you to know we’re going to help you, that’s all.” All of a sudden, she couldn’t look him in the eye.

“We? Earlier, you said this Nic guy was going to help me. Since when do you know what to do about demons?” He narrowed his eyes at her. “You look pale. What’s going on?”

“I was worried about you. That’s all. You were gone for hours.”

Reggie’s face softened. “I’m fine. Now hopefully your friend can make sure I stay that way.” He reached for her hand. She jerked back, staring at his hand like it was a striking snake.

Reggie stared at her, confusion edging into hurt. “You’re really jumpy. Did the thing scare you that badly when it came out? If so, I’m sorry. I wasn’t in control. I don’t remember a thing. But I’m in charge now. I promise.”

“Of course I’m on edge. I mean… demons. Who wouldn’t be?” Her voice was too high, and she spoke too fast. She took another step back from him.
